LE ALPI
Le montagne più belle del mondo sono per buona parte sul territorio italiano, ma per oltre la metà dell'estensione queste si trovano sul territorio degli stati circostanti, con particolare riferimento alla Francia, alla Svizzera e all'Austria (per la definizione precisa e per l'elenco completo degli stati vi rimando alla pagina wikipedia ).
Con Open Trekking Maps ho finora elaborato e condiviso le sole mappe Garmin dell'Italia, sia come intera nazione che come singole regioni. Una volta stabilizzato il progetto e raggiunto un buon livello qualitativo, mi sono cominciato a interrogare sulla limitata utilità di queste mappe per l'uso sulle aree montuose a ridosso del confine nazionale e a pensare alla possibilità di realizzare una mappa a copertura di tutte le Alpi, comprendendo anche i territori esteri. E così ho iniziato a lavorarci sopra...
I confini di questa catena montuosa sono ben definiti a livello geografico. Tuttavia il mio lavoro non è, allo stato attuale, completamente fedele a questa definizione. Ho infatti cercato di tenere fuori le grandi città e in generale le porzioni di territorio meno interessanti sotto il punto di vista escursionistico, per contenere il più possibile le dimensioni del file e agevolare sia le mie procedure di rendering che quelle di upload/download, nonchè il caricamento e l'uso sul GPS Garmin: ne consegue che l'area coperta non corrisponde esattamente all'intera copertura della regione alpina, ma è leggermente più ristretta (si veda l'immagine sopra); è comunque ovviamente preservata l'intera area montana.
Il modello DEM per la definizione dei profili altimetrici è sempre quello di derivazione Viewfinder, che comprende dati basati sugli SRTM Nasa per alcune aree e dati lidar per altre; ho cercato di fare un'ulteriore revisione generale, oltre a quella già fatta da Viewfinder, per coprire gli errori di rilevamento e le aree vuote, ad esempio quelle sui confini e in generale sulle linee di accostamento di modelli diversi. Vista l'estensione dell'area, è tuttavia possibile che permangano degli errori meno visibili, che provvederò a correggere qualora individuati o segnalati dagli utenti.
Il progetto è in fase embrionale e potrà subire modifiche e miglioramenti futuri, come già avviene per le altre mappe.
Condivido il link per il download della prima versione, ringraziando sin da ora chi vorrà aiutarmi nel verificare eventuali problemi e offrire spunti di miglioramento. THE ALPS
The most beautiful mountains in the world are largely on Italian territory, but for over half of their extension they are found on the territory of the surrounding states, with particular reference to France, Switzerland and Austria (for a detailed definition and for the complete list of states please take a look at the wikipedia page).
With Open Trekking Maps I have so far worked and made available only the Garmin maps of Italy, both as an entire nation and as individual regions. Once the project had stabilized and a good level of quality had been reached, I began to question the limited usefulness of these maps for use on the territories close to the national border and to think about the possibility of creating a map covering the entire Alps, including also foreign territories. And so I started to work on it...
The boundaries of this mountain range are well defined geographically. However, my work is not, at present, completely faithful to this definition. In fact, I tried to keep out the big cities and in general the less interesting portions of territory from the hiking point of view, to keep the file size as low as possible and facilitate both my rendering and upload/download procedures, as well as loading and use on the Garmin GPS: it follows that the area covered does not correspond exactly to the entire coverage of the Alpine region, but is slightly narrower (as you can see in the image above); however, the entire mountain area is obviously preserved.
The DEM model for defining the altimetric profiles is always that of Viewfinder derivation, which includes data based on NASA SRTMs for some areas and lidar data for others; I tried to do a further general review, in addition to the one already done by Viewfinder, to cover detection errors and empty areas, for example those on the borders and in general on the joining lines of different models. Given the extension of the area, it is however possible that less visible errors remain, which I will correct if identified or reported by users.
The project is in its embryonic stage and may undergo future changes and improvements, as already happens with the other maps.
I am sharing the link of a first version, thanking from now on anyone who wants to help me verify any problems and offer ideas for improvement. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have done so so far and all those who have sent me their compliments, both privately and through the forms on the site.
The map available for now is the one in the Open Trekking Light layout and the contour lines are integrated. The data, as always, is obviously derived from the OpenStreetMap database (© OpenStreetMap contributors) and is updated as of October 5, 2023.

I reiterate what has already been expressed in the other pages of this blog: the maps are designed for personal use, in an exclusively private and recreational context. The user who decides to download them does so under his own exclusive responsibility and undertakes to carry out every check and test before use in the field, to ensure compatibility with his device and suitability for his needs.
Although they are sufficiently complete and tested, the maps offered free of charge (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license) on this page are to all intents and purposes a work-in-progress and should be considered as such. Errors or shortcomings cannot therefore be excluded, with the fundamental clarification that all the information present in it is derived from the OpenStreetMap database ( © OpenStreetMap contributors ), to which therefore any reports on the inaccuracy or lack of data must be addressed (possibly contributing to the first-person project).
