Custom Layer plugin for OpenStreetMap ID editor

This video shows how the plugin for OpenStreetMap's ID editor works, allowing for quick selection of a custom background layer from a list of 6 options. The text on the buttons is customizable, as is the list of related URLs. It is an extension for Google Chrome that also works within the ID extension itself. While it may not be the most elegant solution, until a similar mode is implemented in the standard version, this allows for easy management of the requirement!

Please note that installation is slightly different between Chrome and Firefox.

How to install for CHROME:

1. unzip the content of the file: you should have a folder named OSMiD_CustomBackground_DEMO with 4 files inside

2. open Chrome and type chrome://extensions/ on URL bar, or open the menu and look for "Manage Extensions"

3. check the box for Developer mode in the top right

4. click on the button Load unpackaged extension and select the folder you created at step 1

5. now you have to setup your buttons and the corresponding URLs. Open the file content.js with a text editor and look for the section CUSTOM BACKGROUND SETUP. Change the TEXT and the URL field for each buttons, like in this picture:

Beware not to modify anything else !

6. it's done: close Chrome, open again and go to openstreetmap (or open ID extension): you should see the new panel when you hit the button for custom background, as in the video.

How to install for FIREFOX

1. download the file OSMiD_CustomBackground_Firefox.zip without unzipping it.

2. Open Firefox, go to ABOUT:ADDONS on the URL bar, or open the menu and look for "Themes and Extensions"

3. Click on the gear button and look for Debug Addons, then load temporary add-on and select the zip file. 

4. Now you have to setup your buttons and URLs. Open the zip file and edit the content.js file, exactly as described above for Chrome (5). Save the file inside the zip and it's done !
